Curator & Arts Consultant
Born and raised in Chicago, Kate Svensson is a curator and arts consultant living and working in New York City who has spent the past five years building a community in the arts. Her more recent curatorial projects have interrogated the status of the object, as artwork and commodity, aligned with the greater cultural movement towards a re-integration of separated disciplines, as well as a return to championing the handmade and the use of found materials. Through this work, Svensson is continually considering space and the ways it can be manipulated to cultivate specific affects with an eye towards the performative relationships enacted between audience and art object.
She is also a recent graduate of NYU's Institute of Fine Arts, and her Master's thesis grew out of a similar obsession with space. In this instance with the way the body felt moving through the landscape of the city. Focusing on Land Art in New York City, Svensson’s research looked at Creative Time's Art on the Beach program at Battery Park City Landfill from 1978-1985 and its subsequent influence on the development of Battery Park City and Public Art Installations; however, this research also allowed her to consider her personal experiences while living in New York in relation to the history of its urban development.
